El cap\u00edtulo IX del Convenio Internacional para la seguridad de la vida humana en el mar (SOLAS) exige el cumplimiento del C\u00f3digo ISM. En 1998, el C\u00f3digo ISM se convirti\u00f3 en obligatorio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El C\u00f3digo ISM exige que se establezca salvaguardias contra los riesgos de seguridad y contaminaci\u00f3n que con llevan las operaciones abordo, al mismo tiempo que se brinda la flexibilidad necesaria para desarrollar y adaptar el sistema de seguridad a la operaci\u00f3n especifica de un propietario \/ administrador de buque.
